Description
The farm was owned by two brothers, hence Broederstroom. One of the brothers was the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius after whom Pretoria was named by his son Martinus Wessels Pretorius, the first president of the Transvaal republic. The entrance to the farm is still to be seen opposite the log cabin shops. Andries would leave home on his horse turn left and was literally on the extension of Church Street to Pretoria.

Andries Pretorius and his brother had many children. The farm was divided amongst them, and the smaller farms were renamed. Many of the descendents of the Pretorius’s still own land around the area. One of the sub-divided farms of Groot Plaas, on the western side, was sold to 1820 settler William Walter Scrooby. There were a few 1820 settlers who came this way, from the Eastern Cape, in order to hunt elephant and remained here, as in the case of Pretorius their decedents are here to this day.
The farm belonging to William Walter Scrooby was again divided between Octavius Benjamin Scrooby and Albert Leopold Scrooby
Part of the farm that belonged to Octavius Benjamin Scrooby is now Westlake.
