Description
Growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe without electricity in the 1970's. This could only mean that ironing was done via the old fashioned method. I do remember that cast iron wood stove was used to heat up bath water and this supplied an endless supply of hot coals. Dick was employed to keep the stove hot. He had the endless task of cutting trees ( which were in abundance ) chopping them for the wood stove. In fact the whole event occurred in Dick's Kitchen. A room at the end of the house that housed the stove, sink, milk separator and the elusive ironing board.

The charcoal iron must have been a task for Dick but our clothes seemed to be pressed perfectly and I cant remember seen them burnt. He must have been a master at it. Taking the hot coals from the wood stove and delicately placing them in the iron. Bare hands I guess as this was his preferred method of determining if they were hot enough for the iron. Sadly Dick decided to return to his home land Mozambique which was in a war zone and became ravaged with poverty.
