Old weathered doors with rusty hinges and loads of character used as tables, heaps of Kelims, pots from Turkey, Morocco, China and Japan and picture frames creatively made from old parts of ceilings. These are among the many surprises at Blue Ivy Art Gallery in Hartbeespoortdam, studios and the brightly colored home of talented artists Charmaine De Jongh-Gelderblom and Pieter Jacques Krugel.Many visitors are drawn to the gallery by the bright colored Mexican cloths hanging over the balcony rails visible to motorists passing by.
The couple seem to possess some kind of magic touch as they do not only create their own paintings, but also manage to make something out of nothing, seeing the potential in “scrap” which literally becomes both earthy and functional conversation pieces in a way that only a true artist can do. “Visiting scrap yards is my hobby, ” Charmaine says.
