Company description
Core activities relate to freshwater and estuarine assessments. These studies incorporate the state, biology and biodiversity assessments of aquatic fauna, aquatic and riparian vegetation, as well as physico-chemical assessments of water and sediments and laboratory-based toxicology and ecotoxicology. In the form of RAUEcon, Econ@uj has a proven track record with numerous completed projects and successful collaborations with government institutions such as the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, the Water Research Commission, the South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity, and private partners representing the mining, agricultural and industrial sectors. The consortium is based at the University of Johannesburg through the Faculty of Science and the Zoology Department. Within the Zoology Department two Professors (Prof. JHJ van Vuren and Prof. V Wepener) have 25 years of experience in the fields of applied and fundamental Aquatic Health and offer support to the specialists of the consortium. Specialists of Econ@uj include fulltime, as well as, part-time specialists. The fulltime specialists include the project managers/coordinators based at Econ@uj, of which there are a number that specialise in the fields of Limnology and Ecotoxicity / Ecotoxicology, with experience in the fields of applied aquatic resource management and general aquatic health. Part time specialists of Econ@uj include contracted specialists who can offer specialist or technical support to the fulltime specialists on specific projects. A resource base of specialist researchers are available from the Zoology (primarily), Geography, Geology, Environmental Management, Botany and Engineering departments from the University of Johannesburg.
