I encourage my patients to have custom mouthguards made. One day a properly designed mouthguard could save your childs life. Mouthguards can also prevent concussion and death. Trauma/force to the lower jaw forces it upward against the top jaw- causing concussion or jarring of the brain. Migraines are often caused by grinding:Many of us grind and clench our teeth, sometimes during the day but most often without knowing it when we are asleep. This habit called bruxing is damaging to our teeth, and causes loss of tooth structure on the tops and necks of our teeth. This can lead to sensitivity to hot and cold drinks and foods and unsightly teeth. It can also cause painful "clicking" jaw joints, jaw muscles and pain in the head and neck and even headaches.
um disease causes red, inflamed bleeding gums (often without pain) and over time, loss of bone around the roots of teeth, causing their eventual loss. We cannot grow back the bone around the roots of the teeth and people can lose healthy teeth without cavities or fillings, because of the loss of supporting tissue. This is a disease that must be prevented because once you have experienced bone loss it is often impossible to reverse the loss and most of our treatment can only achieve the preservation of what is left! Poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease causes bad breath and most people who have it, are often unaware of it! The best treatment again is prevention.
