Company description
Less than half a century ago, the 400 hectares on which the course and housing development now stand formed part of the greater Bosch Hoek Farm, owned by the legendary Punch Barlow. The late Mr Barlow, who would later become one of the prime motivators behind the establishment of the River Club in Johannesburg, decided to build this course in the early 1960’s, and in 1963 the first drive was struck. Bob Grimsdell, already then an acclaimed course architect, was commissioned to work his magic in converting the maize fields into what is today a superb golfing facility.
The course was then strictly private and remained so for more than 30 years. Thankfully, this is no longer the case since 1990 the Peter Gallo launched Bosh Hoek Golf and Country Estate and the housing development came into being. The club now welcomes visitors and there could hardly be a better venue for corporate golf days.
The nine hole, 18 tee course is designed around a lake, dams, streams and beautiful trees. It is a challenging course with water features on seven holes: the par 3 fifth hole is laid over a small dam and the par 5 sixth hole runs along the edge of a large lake.
Added attractions are the variety and abundance of bird life, the fresh country air and the views of the indigenous bush on the surrounding hills. All of which add up to a feeling of tranquility and serenity. A feeling continued at the charming clubhouse overlooking the course.
The course measures only 5,840 metres, certainly on the short side when one considers that Bosch Hoek’s elevation above sea level is about 1000m. The layout is rated a 68, but with the pins hidden away and the grainy cynodon greens speeded up, this would be a tough task for the scratch player. More importantly, no matter what the novice or expert golfer scores here, the round will certainly be one to remember.
